About this converter
Gas prices are hard to compare across the border: Canada prices fuel in Canadian dollars per litre, the US in US dollars per gallon: different currency and different unit at the same time. This tool does both conversions in one step using a live exchange rate, and also translates fuel economy between L/100km (used in Canada) and MPG (used in the US), so you can compare pump prices and vehicle efficiency on equal footing.

How does the price conversion work?
USD per gallon = CAD per litre × litres per gallon ÷ exchange rate, where the exchange rate is how many Canadian dollars one US dollar buys. Both the unit (litre → gallon) and the currency (CAD → USD) have to be converted, which is why a quick mental estimate is usually wrong.
What's the difference between a US gallon and an Imperial gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785 litres; an Imperial (UK/older Canadian) gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20% larger. US pump prices and window-sticker MPG always use US gallons. Use the toggle to switch.
How do I compare L/100km with MPG?
They're inverse measures: lower L/100km is better, higher MPG is better. MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km. For example, 8.0 L/100km is roughly 29 MPG (US).
Where does the exchange rate come from?
It loads from the Frankfurter API (European Central Bank reference rates) with a fallback source. It's a daily reference rate, not the retail rate your card charges, and you can type in your own rate at any time.
